The apparatus is based on the
experimental technique originally described by Cook. The present compact
model has an experimental chamber with a grid-floor and a sliding clear perspex door. The safety area is a removable wooden pole attached to the top
of the chamber. An electronic buzzer and a chamber light are also provided.
The exterior of
the enclosure is made of high quality sun-mica laminated ply. One of the
sides is removable to give access to all parts inside.
A solid state
stimulator with built-in timer provides a high voltage spike of 0.2 mA at a
frequency of 5 per second. The duration of stimuli may be controlled
manually or by a built-in timer that can be switched into the circuit with
either the conditioned stimulus (buzzer) or the unconditioned stimulus
(shock) to provide a duration of about 30 seconds. Outputs are also
available for recording on polygraph or kymograph.
